In episode 11, a few days after she ran away to Jeju, Dong-gyeong (Park Bo-young)'s family and friend arrive after being contacted by Myeol-mang (Seo In-guk). Dong-gyeong walks a trail with her best friend Ji-na (Shin Do-hyun), stops at this landmark observatory, and takes a selfie. About her escape attempt, she says, "I thought I'd run away, but after arriving I realized everything I love is here." Ji-na promises to always cheer her on from beside her rather than run away with her. Ji-na confesses she's dating Hyeon-gyu again, but Dong-gyeong, not liking Cha Ju-ik at work, asks about it. Ji-na insists it's not true. Meanwhile, Myeol-mang watches them from a nearby cliff.

In Episode 27, Chief Court Lady Choi schemes to become the supervisor overseeing all the palace kitchens, and poisons the duck rice prepared by Lady Han (Yang Mi-kyung) and Jang-geum (Lee Young-ae) for the sickly King Jungjong. Charged with treason, the two women are beaten and exiled to Jeju Island, but Lady Han falls ill during the journey. Jang-geum carries her on her back along a path through reed fields and atop cliffs, but sadly her mentor passes away.
